    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

and for the OP...since you stated that this thread had nothing to do with your Vanilla since she isn't on antibiotics...

you forgot to mention she WAS on antibiotics less then a month ago? (or at least you where talking about her being on antibiotics less then a month ago, you never mentioned when her last dose was given)

How is her injury doing? Is it still looking more irritated and not healing?

Do you plan to breed her before she is 100% recovered?

(these are the reasons most shady people ask questions like the ones asked here today, and why I don't feel curiosity or info for future breeders is why this thread was started....please prove me wrong by not breeding your injured snake this season)

Lucille, none of us are perfect. I have been snippy at times, also. One thing that has always irritated me is having "someone" else try and tell me how I should word my responses, or what attitude I should have.:rolleyes:

Some days, I'll have a perfect response, and some days, some one will rub me the wrong way. It goes with the territory when posting on a forum. Of course, when I am talking to a child (my responses will tend to always be nice if the child is actually a child..but most times if it's an adult pressing my buttons, I just type what's on my mind, review for language...and as long as it gets my point across, I wouldn't waste a minute on the "shouldas, wouldas, and couldas.: :shrug01:

The snake incident in question (death, R.I.) was one that perhaps could have been prevented if the owner had done half the "research" that he claims. Since he'd stated that he had the snake for a while, it's almost a certainty that it didn't arrive sick.

I think most of your responses are right on.

My answer was more geared toward how I think I could have laid out better why I though he should have found another vet
after he had issues with his first. That might get him to go out and find another vet which I think he needs to do. And I do think that providing help via info can help people's critters.
 
To the OP: What were the symptoms of the RI when you first noticed it? If she died of just the RI and not further complications, I would think you noticed the later-stage symptoms instead of the initial ones.

As for antibiotics and gravid females.... Snakes are different than mammals. Mammals are continually exchanging blood and other fluids with babies until they're born, which would mean antibiotics could easily affect the baby. But if a female ball python is gravid--especially late-term--the yolks are done forming and the shells are calcifying around them. Can the antibiotics actually affect the eggs? I can see how the stress the female is under could adversely affect the eggs, but what about medications? Do the antibiotics kill off good bacteria that is essential in egg formation? Would someone with a better knowledge of snake/reptile reproduction help me out here?

THE VANILLA IS DOING A BIT BETTER ITS STILL A DAILY BATTLE. AND I DONT PLAN ON BREEDING HER UNTILL SHE IS BETTER. SHES WAY TO WEAK TO BE STICKING MY HORNY MALES IN THERE WITH HER AND WEARING HER OUT EVEN MORE THAN SHE ALREADY IS. NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT MY COLLECTION IS VERY SMALL AND ONLY EXISTS OF ON A FEW MALES, I CANT IMAGINE HAVING TO DEAL WITH MORE THAN ONE SICK SNAKE

I am under the impression that a respiratory infection was viral in nature and that antibiotics were prescribed as a precaution in case it was actually bacterial in nature. Wouldn't the vet run a culture to make sure what they were dealing with for the best course of action? I have never dealt with an RI so, I don't know for sure.

I have had an experience with my vet once on a bacterial infection where a culture was taken and I had to pay about $100 more. I was given antibiotics to deliver orally to start treatment and was notified days later that the results were back, and the prescribed medication was the right choice to treat. My vet did ask me if the snake had eggs or was breeding, so it must have some sort of negative effect on the process.

If your snake is well prepared before entering the breeding season you should be okay but things can happen. Treating your female and protecting your collection really should be the only priority you have. There's always next year!
 
If Hussler wanted to ask questions without addressing any background info, the simple approach is to post the questions without including the background info. He didn't do that. He posted information that raised questions, and added a comment or two that raised more.
Are we supposed to know when he is posting inaccurate information? For example - she contracted the resp infection out of nowhere a few days before laying her eggs, but died before laying....that seems pretty clear that the time from observing the problem to death was a couple of days. Then it was changed to the animal received 2 weeks of antibiotics - which, btw - is not unusual, considering that many vets prescribe Batril to be administered every other day. Since the initial post stated that he did not trust his vet, it could have gone either way whether he treated the animal or didn't. I (apparently mistakenly) read it as he did not...because he doubted his vet.

The simple answer to the questions:
Can you give antibiotics to a gravid snake - yes...and you should, if they are needed. The added part, about whether it will affect the babies is not as clear cut; and I had specific reasons for not responding to it. I have a few people ask these questions over the years; and the majority of them (at least the ones that posted about their decisions) - regardless of what they were told - have decided to wait until deposition. No antibiotics, no temp increase (because that WILL endanger the babies)....too often, the female dies unnecessarily.
In this case, I don't know what to believe, since Hussler has posted two different stories. If he did, in fact, treat with Baytril without response, there are a few different explanations. He waited too long, Baytril was not the appropriate drug, there was more going on than the RI (which may, or may not, bounce back to item 1 - he waited too long), or the antibiotics played a role in the death. There are a couple of other things I can think of, but there's not a lot of reason to spend the time to sort it out under the circumstances.

Can one breed a snake that is on antibiotics? As has been said repeatedly...common sense should dictate that it is a bad idea.

I think I saw a comment that a new vet was in order - not sure why :shrug01: Because the snake died? Because Hussler doesn't trust him?

I made the comment about getting a new vet after Hussler wrote that he did not trust the old one. No reason was given for the mistrust, but if there were issues with the relationship between vet and client, I do think that a new vet was in order rather than having no vet at all.
 
Hmmm - I had typed up another response, but I don't see it here. Probably never submitted it because I got distracted by something. I'll see if I can backspace through enough windows in one of these tabs to find it, lol.

Anyway, I understand your logic, Lucille; and agree that the OP should find a vet with whom he is comfortable. His distrust of his current (or past, since it was a year ago) vet's judgement may not have a solid basis, but it still makes for a shaky relationship.
