We just took our snakes to a workshop for the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (Government department) who are tasked with preventing the influx of invasive species into Fiji.
Of particular concern is the Brown Tree Snake from Australia and Papua New Guinea, which has got to Guam (thought to have travelled in shipping containers) and wiped out most bird life there, and has been detected in Hawaii and now Texas.
A specialist trainer had been brought in from Guam to train the guys in snake detection and handling if found, but these guys have never actually seen a live snake of any kind, so we took four of our Fiji Boas over for some handling experience.
Fijians in general are NOT fond of snakes, even though we really do not have any harmful species here, so it was a real tribute to these guys that they came eagerly forward for this experience. After only a few minutes most were really enjoying the interaction, as can be seen on their faces.
