    =====================

    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
    Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

    And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

I want to know what your pros and cons are? I have used aspen, sanichips, and coconut before. I have been using aspen but my supplier out here sucks. I usually buy 10 boxes at a time because of this fact but still have issues. The sanichips I like for spot cleaning, but hate that they stick to the rats and get in the snakes mouth. If I am correct because its been years since I used coconut, there was alot of dust in it and it molded quick I think. Chime in and give me your 2 cents.

I have been using cyprus for a long time. I think it works great. You have to check the quatity to find the good stuff. I get mine from Home Depot and it is always clean. My Bps seem to thrive on it as well..

hey Casey, never thought of looking at home depot for it. Guess that would be good when my supplier runs out! How long does it usually last? How is spot cleaning and mold? I hear it holds humidity well.

I use cypress and coco mix Randy. Holds humdity superbly, as long as you have good ventilation. I use 1 brick coco husk to 1.5 cubic yards of mulch. Normally does about 3/4 of my bins. I agree to go with better quality triple shredded.

I get mine at Agway, a farm supply place around here. about 5$ per 3 cubic yard bag.

Hold humidity great, Very little mold unless it is on feces. I usually spot clean sheds and poo, and change if I detect any odor. I would say it lasts 2-3 times as long as aspen.

ok thanks guys. I didn't even realize it was that cheap either. I have been use to getting these other couple types, never thought about how much cheaper that could be.

lowes hardware almost always has it as well, cypress works great, looks good in a cage as well. kinda gives a set up a more natural look. the only thing is make sure the store you buy it from doesnt keep their mulches near chemicals (usually if kept near chemicals its usually something for yards and gardens). i have personally bought some that when i went to put it in a cage i could smell the chemical smell soaked into the mulch. this has only happened once, but other than that have never had a problem with cypress.

I guess a con would be we harvest more cypress than what can grow every year. May not be important to some but worth mentioning.

I use the cypress blend from Home Depot (they dont sell pure, but the blend is just fine). Everything 300g+ gets cypress. I currently did an experiment with putting some of the larger snakes on papertowels same as the babies. Man was that a mess. The tubs were tore up and a wreck the next day. The cypress is great for humidity and is mold and bacteria resistant. Pretty easy to spot clean too and the pieces are large enough that I dont worry about my snakes ingesting too much of it.

I stay away from the blends, because you never truly know what else is in there. As far as the comment about it being unsustainable. The mulch is simply the parts that can't be used for other function, the scraps if you will. They will continue to harvest the same amount, regardless of mulch demand. The demand would have to be cut in cypress lumber before it could affect the amount that is harvested each year, thus raising the price but not the supply of mulch.

The price I listed Randy, was at a feed store and purchased in bulk. I beleive I bought 15 or 25 bags at a time to get that price. But it keeps ( being mold resistant) and I don't have to worry about any bugs. I do bake a batch of it in a hot box I made before placing in cages.

Just incase anyone's interested, the blend at Home Depot has the ingredients listed as such:

Primary Specific Wood Species: Cypress (Chamaecyparis, Cupressus, Taxodium)
Secondary Specific Wood Species: Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa)

For the price, I havent found anything better.

went to home depot and lowes and neither had any. If anyone has the name or picture of the bag can you send it or post it please

Do you have a farm and feed store near you? That will be your cheapest bet probably. That's where I get my cypress, aspen for rats, and rat food, and rock salt and so on and so forth.

figures Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart carry it but not on the west coast! I am learning to live without 100 round magazines for supressed AR15's, throwing a supercharger and NOS on your big block Opal GT, but no mulch.......I'm drawing the line there!

Lol its a seasonal thing here on the WC. Personally I prefer aspen, since my guy might be getting outta the hobby I may be getting his contact and ordering pallets of aspen. I'd hate to have to pay pet store prices.

yeah I liked aspen except for the dust but having issues getting it. Plus I pay about $25 a box, so if I can get that down to half the price = me happy!
