    =====================

    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
    Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

    And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. I hope I'm posting this in the right area. But - I see how you can add to someone's karma - but what drives reputation? I'm not sure if they are one and the same, but I've noticed that some people with higher karma than myself have a lower reputation level.

I did a quick search on the forum, but didn't really find anything, which is why I'm asking here.

Thanks!

Hope this helps

Karma power used to be called Rep (reputation) power. That number is the number gradient you see when you put your cursor over someone else's Karma circle(s). Yours is 50-149. If you were not aware, you can view your Karma number by clicking on the User CP button.

Does that answer your question?

So, what does the 10 mean beside the green box (on mine)? I saw what my reputation level was, but I also saw someone else had 50 some in the number next to the green box, but their reputation was lower than mine (from hovering).

That's where my confusion is. What does the number beside the karma power indicate? And why would someone else's be higher, but their reputation lower? Does that make sense?

That's actually a good question.

I have the number 8 next to my green boxes (or circles or whatever) and my reputation level is at 550-649. I've looked at my Karma under the User CP but the number 8 doesn't match anything - not the number of different people that left the Karma nor the subjects of the posts I received Karma for.

It's also the number that you give to someone else, when you give them a "good Karma" vote. If you have 8 points then when you click on someone's post to give them Karma they get 8 points added. If you give a "bad Karma" vote (you have to be a paid member) I believe it is half the points. IE. you would deduct 4 points from someones total.

OK, but what do the green boxes represent? Why do some people have a bunch, but thier karma is not as high as someone else. But they may have more green boxes? :rolleyes:

Thanks David. That makes sence!! LoL. :)

Ok, I have one more question. What do the purpel squares mean in the karma? I have two of those in my user CP.

Are you talking about the little boxes next to all the "karma received" panel? Mine are more of a grey. Anyway if that is what you are talking about it is when someone gave one of your posts a "vote" (not sure if only positive or also negative), but they don't have any of their own karma points to give (or maybe also take) so it doesn't affect your reputation number. Essentially a "neutral" hit. Positive votes the little button is green, negative...I think it would be red (not sure since I don't have any of those.

I don't have any red ones either. Just two of the gray/purple ones, and the rest are green. Thanks John!!

Why are the names not listed next to the person who gave you Karma any more?
They used to be right there but now it's gone.

Greg,
It is linked to level of your paid membership. At a certain level, the names of all who give or take rep points from you will be visible.

That is correct. Only Contributor level members and above can see who posted the karma points.

You pay a little bit, and more and more gets taken away. Sounds like a few government operations I'm familiar with. :censored:

Well, when I first set up this site, I gave away everything for free. So a while back I decided to make some attractive perks and restrict some of the utility to people who are helping to pay the bills here. Certainly I expected some people to feel that I was obligated to continue giving them everything for free for all eternity. Sorry to disappoint them with a little dose of reality here. But heck, I guess everyone else just gives away all their services for free, eh?
