If you take an image and display it on 100 different monitors chances are it will look different on each one. In order to get some kind of consistency you need to calibrate your monitor. I personally use the Spyder hardware system to calbrate my monitors, scanners and printers daily so that I get accuracy and consistency through all of them. It's a pretty expensive little toy though and unless you're a pro photographer there's really no reason to have to go through all that. Here is a simple little online calibration tool that should help though. Another thing, especially if you smoke, make sure to wipe down your screen and clean all the built up crap on it before you start this. Here's the link
