    =====================

I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

Hello All,

I just thought I would inform everyone that I have launched an Adeno virus society. I have been working on it & planning for over a year now, & have finally gotten the site up for this breeding season 2008.
I feel that this virus has taken a pretty large toll on the bearded dragon colonies in a huge amount of the US now. I wanted to try & help in some way, even if it is a small way.
Thanks for the support. :D

Wow,so many views and no replies?
Tracie, this is an awesome thing you are doing and keep up the great work! We all appreciate the hard work you are doing for the beardie community :)

Congratulations and kudos to all the people on the breeders list that are actively testing, ESPECIALLY Denise who has proved to so many skeptics that she does indeed have a AV-negative colony. :D (you too Gina!).

Good luck to Anthony and Angie on the completed test results.

I wish all of you the best and when someone asks for a caring and responsible breeder I will be sure to mention Denise,Gina,Anthony and Angie :) (and anyone else that decides to be responsible and test)

Good luck to all of you on your future testings in 2008!

I agree, Michele, this is a wonderful thing! I have a feeling it will be of a lot more help than Tracie realizes.

Tracie, thanks for being so dedicated to these scaly babies we all love so much.

Thanks!

Hello You Two,

Wow, thanks, that was very nice of you! I will do my best to try & provide as good a service as I can. I just want to help out in any way that I can. The dragons deserve the best they can get!! :D

Thanks!

What do you want us to reply on, exactly? Yes, It is great that someone actually took the incentive to do something proactive, unlike yourself. I support it and would actually like to see Tracie put a donation button on the site. Let people help her with upkeep costs of the site and/or donate to the ongoing research at U of F. Or even help out fellow herpers that want to test, but for financial reasons cannot. Maybe we could help out.

It is a first step in the right direction, but in my opinion, way too soon to label a breeder totally "adeno-free" or to "have a AV-negative colony". There are 4 breeders right now on the site, one has tested once (2007 Gina Searles), two have not tested all their breeders yet.(Annapolis Bearded and Angie Martin) and one (Denise) ''She has done several rounds of testing prior to now which all have yielded negative results from 2007 & previously.'' Which is not totally accurate because she did have postives in her home, but removed the dragons.(Correct me if I am mistaken.) But it will be valuable data to see if, after removing the positives, can your remaining negatives continue to test negative for years?...Time will tell.

I sent in my samples for testing and am saddened to say that pretty much my entire colony has been cross infected from the adenovirus outbreak I had last season. Herbie, my pride and joy, is positive. I tested 5 out of 7 dragons and 4 were positive. I think the other one is as well, she is just not shedding the virus. It is important to note that all of these dragons tested negative using the fecal em last fall. Ongoing testing needs to be done.

Actually what I am saying is that the nested PCR that University of Gainesville, Florida does is much better than the EM test. It is more pricey but the fact that they are using two sequential primers and sequencing the viral DNA is one of the big reasons why this test is more specific and more costly.

I know that PCR testing is more pricey, but as Rawdag and the UofF have stated, it is a more accurate testing method as stated in the report " It can therefore be expected that EM-Electron microscopy will result in a significantly higher rate of False negative results."

Do you plan on requiring PCR testing as well as EM testing in the future? To get a very clear, long term picture I would think you would need to test negative continually both ways. If we want larger breeder to start testing, should you not start with the smaller breeders with a handful or so of dragons and show that they test both EM and PCR negative. Show the larger breeders that both testing methods are continually yielding negative results over a long period of time. Because I fear that if you limit to EM only, they will fire back that it is not reliable to only test EM.

I do commend you Tracie for taking this on and hope you can stay fair and impartial, so more breeders will contribute data in the future.

One last thing, are they testing the baby bins also? Are any babies being tested or just the breeders?

Thanks, Jean

always have to argue huh jean? alls i heard was "blah blah blah". ;)

anyways tracie, didn't you receive my "contribution" to your site in the mail a couple days ago? i "had incentive to do something proactive" to help out you and your efforts :yesnod: im sure you will find it very valuable in your research efforts on AV :) :) :) keep up the great work and let me know if there is anything else i could do for you!

omg, will you ever grow up jean?? you are looking ridiculous bringing old stuff to this thread.i am only posting on here because its for a good cause. try to stay on topic please ok? be mature and do not ruin tracie's thread, she has put alot of work into this. try to be respectful.

Tracie, I think you are doing a great thing.

Also, let me remind everyone, attacking people outside the BOI is not allowed.

Tracie-

Please don't let the rude comments of some scare you away from helping the rest of us the way you are. Whether those "some" like it or not is of no consequence because no matter what you do, it will never be good enough for the "some". At least you're trying to do something positive, rather than running around picking fights, and that's more than "some" can say.

You've worked hard on this, and I, for one, appreciate it, and commend you for it.

The site looks fantastic, by the way!

Hello

Hello,

I just wanted to thank everyone for their support & yes, their questions as well as suggestions. :D

First off, thank you Michele, for your contribution this month, it was very generous & I appreciate it! Thanks!

Let me address them for you.

While I do realize as I did state on my site, that this is not a perfect system nor is it on a large scale by any means, it IS a start. I mean, if people do not begin to try & change & increase awareness in order to start some standardization then it will never get done. The only way to gather data is to MAKE data. The only way to make data is to begin testing. My goal is simple, I want to help dragons, that is all.

To correct a couple of remarks. I do know that Gina has tested 2 times last year & is beginning her testing now for this year which will be her 3rd testing round. Anthony tested his breeders last year, all except for 2 & they were negative, but, he has decided to retest them all over again for this year. The new breeder Angie, this is her first testing round. We all know of Denise's results & I am very anxious to begin working with her as well.
As of right now, just the breeders are being tested, we will start with that. I think that is fair, considering just getting people to test is going to be a feat in itself. I am sure if I did request the babies be tested, then they would most likely comply, especially if any problems do arise.

As far as expanding to start offering the PCR, yes, I am planning on doing so. One thing at a time, that is all I can do. It is going to be hard enough as it is to get people to do the test at $24 so to ask them to pay $150 or more is pretty much impossible at this point. So, I decided to start with the fecal EM which in my opinion, is very accurate. Yes, it does pick up on other non specific adeno virus' that are non specific to dragons, but it still does not have too many errors. While the PCR is good, it still can have errors too, because it is almost too sensitive in some cases, picking up on everything & sometimes not differentiating between them. Please do not pick me apart on all of this as I have never claimed to be an "expert" in how these tests are reading. I am learning, still. I do know that Lou Ann is very professional & I worked hard on getting the legal form written & approved through the legal department. So, once this gets started & I can evaluate how it is going, then, I will look into contacting Dr. Stacy at the University of Florida regarding joining us in this effort.

As far as contributions & or donations, I have a very limited site. I am making sure that my data is correct in as far as where any donations could be sent to for Adeno virus research to the University of Illinois before I put that information on my site. I could run that by Dr. Stacy as well.

Jean, yes, it most definitely will be very valuable data to be gathering with regards to how consistent everything continues to test. This is needed however, in order to help in the fight against it & hopefully finding a cure or some type of vaccination against it possibly. This is just the beginning I hope. I will do my best in helping everyone out.

As you see, I do plan to cover all of the bases, or intend to try my best to do so. I appreciate the input.

tracie, great post. it IS a very long process that just started and i hope ppl are patient with you and try to understand that this whole system will be perfected over time.
i think we should COMMEND the ppl that are involved in this instead of picking them apart. At least some breeders are taking the chance, stepping forward and testing.Don't they even sign a waiver with lou ann making all their testing public info? i think they deserve applause!

Yes, Tracie, thanks for all your hard, dedicated work. The beardies and their owners thank you for it. Puppytoes, thanks for bringing it to everyones attention so she would get some responses. Hopefully the good ones outweigh the negative comments regarding past problems that occurred. Keep up the good work Tracie. :iagree:

Hello

Hello,

Thanks you all! I appreciate it. :D
Yes, it is a long process, I wish it was faster, but it is not. Yes, they do sign a waiver or essentially give me permission to post their test results so everyone can keep track. That takes alot of nerve to allow people to see what is going on.
Emotionally what they are putting out into the open, is tremendous. So, their efforts are pricelss for this society. I really can't thank them enough for getting started with me.

Tracie,

You should be commended for taking a proactive approach to gathering information about adenovirus. Obviously there are different views concerning this virus, but we will never be able to come to a definitive conclusion until actual facts are accumulated. The site is an awesome start!

I don't think Jean was trying to be rude...she brought up some good points and valid questions. I wondered many of the same things.

Hello

Hello Jamie,

Oh thank you. Well, I hope that we can gather enough data to find out what in the world is going on!! It is a start. I had been thinking about it for awhile but finally got off of my butt & got it done!
You are right though, we wont find anything out unless something is started. In the process of all of this maybe another test will come out that will be more accurate. Who knows. If so, then, we can adjust & make changes to better our methods of testing & data compilation. I am open for change when the time comes.
I just thought we should do something, anything to try & get a hold on things right now, if we possibly can.
Thanks again, Jamie, I appreciate it. I promise I will do the best job that I can. Don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Tracie.
Canadians still can not sign up...

Hello

Hello Jim,

I will ask Lou Ann about that next week. She has been busy with coming off of the holidays & half of the staff was off. She broke her arm, too! :D
So I will shoot her an email tomorrow to see if she can offer any information, or perhaps a business contact to speak to or email.
