    =====================

    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
    Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

    And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERY HERPER YOU KNOW!

HI HERPERS:: WE NEED YOUR HELP ... The following House Bill has been introduced to the Texas Legislature by Representative Harvey Hilderbran, a Republican, who represents the Kerrville area in the House. This would affect all of those who own or possess or transport into this state a live venomous snake or live constrictor that is not indigenous to this country, (That's right, country, not county.) This proposed Bill would require permits from everyone who deals with these reptiles and will be enforced by Texas Parks & Wildlife.

A copy of this Bill in its entirety is below. It is up to us to stop this Bill in its tracks. Calls and emails to Rep. Hilderbran (who authored the Bill) have not been answered or returned.

Please participate in this important Legislation.

We need to send letters, emails, faxes or make phone calls to Rep. Harvey Hildebran as well as the members on this Committee. We also need to contact the House Representatives and Senators in our area, as well as the Governor, Lt. Governor and Speaker of the House. And, it wouldn't hurt to contact each Member of the House and Senate. Anything and everything you can do will help.

PLEASE SEND US A COPY OF ANY LETTER, EMAIL OR FAX THAT YOU SEND TO THESE REPRESENTATIVES. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE YOUR NAME, ADDRESS, EMAIL ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER(S), FAX AS WELL AS THE NAME OF THE COUNTY YOU ARE FROM.

IF YOU ARE SENDING AN EMAIL FROM YOUR COMPUTER, PLEASE bcc US ON IT.

IF YOU ARE SENDING AN EMAIL FROM THE LEGISLATURE eMAIL, PLEASE BLOCK COPY IT, FORWARD IT TO US, THEN SEND IT TO THE LEGISLATURE.

IF YOU HAVE PHOTOS OF YOUR CHILDREN HOLDING SNAKES (A LITTLE BALL PYTHON OR BOA) THAT IS NON-NATIVE TO THIS COUNTRY, PLEASE ATTACH THEM. THIS WILL BE EFFECTIVE IN GETTING TO THE HEART OF THIS MATTER -- CUTE PICTURES AND CUTE CHILDREN!

WE WILL ACT AS A CLEARINGHOUSE FOR ALL OF THESE DOCUMENTS. IN THE EVENT WE ARE ABLE TO MEET WITH THIS COMMITTEE IN AUSTIN, ALL OF THESE DOCUMENTS WILL BE VERY HELPFUL. WE CAN'T STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS.

NON-TEXAS RESIDENTS

For those of you who reside outside of Texas, please send your letter, email, faxes to the Members of the above committee for House Bill 1309. This is just as important for you. If you attend any reptile shows in Texas, this could create a lot of problems and high costs, as no-doubt, the out-of-state residents will have to pay a higher permit fee. This also pertains to those of you who transport into Texas.

SAMPLE LETTER

This is a sample letter that you can send to the legislators. You can add or delete the contents, and add any other comments you may have. Remember, send us a copy and include photos if you have any. We need to act fast on this!

Dear Representative / Senator / Governor / Lt. Governor / Speaker of the House __________________

We are a group of hobbyists who keep reptiles and we vehemently oppose your pending legistation, HB 1309.

We feel our rights to house or purchase ANY reptiles, whether indigenous or not to this country, should be without restraints or dictated by law. We are professionals, zoo curators, students, animal care technicians, breeders and hobbyists, plus we are represented by people from all walks of life.

The impending legislation HB 1309, would prohibit our passion and life long endeavor for caring or studying reptiles. This affects not only Texas residents, but people from other states or countries who bring non-native Texas snakes into Texas.

Did you ever stop to think that many children and adults who are allergic to dogs and cats have found an alternative with snakes and other reptiles? In fact, one of the most popular beginner snakes is the Ball Python which comes from Central Africa. Ball Pythons are a small species, are very hearty and require minimal care, as opposed to dogs and cats. Plus, we know of no one who is allergic to snakes and other reptiles!

What is your agenda behind this H.B. 1309? Who are the constituents who asked you to present this Bill?

We are a huge group of voters and we want our voices to be heard.

Your name

Your address

Your county (if in Texas)

When does this start ? I spoke with a game warden today to ask him What I neede to do to collect reptiles from the wild as well as keeping hots. I was told that in the city of Houston that it is agenst the law to keep exotic snakes, mainly constrictors. And as far as keeping hots go's that I can have what ever and as maney as I want I want as long as it is native to the state. That is ok by me as I plan on keeping rattle snakes. As far as collecting in the wild go's he said that I would only need to get a hunting ($12.00) if I were going to collect 25 or more animals. I was also told that if I blan on dealing in venomus reptiles I would need to get a permit for that. Now what really got me was that if I were a dealer and I sold Little Jonny DumDum ans EDB and he got bitten while putting the EDB in his mouth that I am liable for damages ! I went to parks and wild life and was put intouch with this fellow and if you like I can see if it will be allright to put his number up here so you all can ask questions that you may have.

Local Laws

I am trying to find information on any and all local exotic
animal laws especially snakes and I am coming up with zilch.
Any help would be great.

So I can't own a ball python now? Or am I not reading this right?

Jeremy, here is a list I found, I am looking to see if there are any subsequent lists or amendments, but ball pythons are not on this list:

(1) Commercial possession--The possession of a controlled exotic snake for the purpose of sale.

(2) Controlled exotic snake--Any live snake that is:

(A) a venomous snake not indigenous to Texas;

(B) any of the following:

(i) African rock python (Python sebae);

(ii) Asiatic rock python, (Python molurus);

(iii) green anaconda, (Eunectes murinus);

(iv) reticulated python, (Python reticulatus);

(v) southern African python, (Python natalensis); or

(C) a hybrid of any species listed in this paragraph

It makes m,e legal that my 6-7' SD retics are smaller than my biggest bullsnakes FROM Texas lines....and I need a permit to keep those animals.....lol.

Does the new permit system mean ..................

If a Snake on pemit statis escapes, Does this constitute Releasing into the Wild? Thus a offense with a fine from $500-$4000? DUH!!!!!

Hey...As you probably know, I live in TX.

In probably the worst place to live for exotics of any kind.

That's why I kind of want to move to a different county.

I currently live in Ft. Bend, and I was thinking of maybe Montgomery.

I'd like any experience from people

Only a few years ago, ferrets were illegal where I live.

Now I have a question that does not pertain to snakes or other herps.

I've read this:

"Exotic animal possession that requires this license are animals that are classified as danger(ous) wild animals."

These animals are:

"Lions, ocelots, leopards, tigers, cougars, cheetahs, bobcats, jaguars, servals, lynxs, hyenas, caracals, coyotes, bears, baboons, jackals, orangutan, chimpanzee, gorilla or any hybrid cross offspring of these animals."

Does this mean I'd have to acquire a permit for any of these animals listed below?

  • Kinkajou
  • Coatimundi
  • Tamarins (Red handed or Emperor)
  • Wallabies
  • Ringtail Cats (I've heard that you have to have a fur propagation license.)
  • Asian Leopard Cats
  • Red, Arctic, or Fennec Fox

Hey Keith, do you know if you have to have a permit for breeding and distrubuting Bearded dragons here in Cove? By the way, love cameleon counters, i'm always in there with buddies who enjoy feeding everyone in the store LOL. Maybe one day i'll have to bring in a couple of my beardies :) come summer next year I should have plenty of babies crawling all over the place, excited!!! http://hecticlife.webs.com/ourdragons.htm
