    =====================

    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
    Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

    And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

Hello all,
I'll be moving to the Tampa, Florida area soon. I have put an add up on CL a few times advertising that I'm looking for a room to rent but I get a lot of replies telling me that someone would rent to me but they are terrified of snakes etc..... I have a Ball Python and a Corn snake. I find this amusing b/c a dog will bark and keep everyone awake and tear up the house. A cat will also tear up the house and pee on everything. My snakes will do none of these things but snakes are not a socially accepted pet like dogs and cats are. As usual you can't apply basic math to the situation it's the usual mix of politics and Religion. Anyway has anyone on here found an easy approach method for renting a place when you have snakes? Someone once told me to apply and say that you have Aquarium Pets which technically they are. Anyway what are some approaches some of you have used when trying to find an apartment to rent and dealing with the general public's fear of snakes? Have a good one guys/gals.

To be completely honest, I live in an apartment, and the landlord knows about the cats and dogs, but has no clue about the reptiles. We moved in before we had most of them - and none are big and/or dangerous, so we just don't feel the need to call them up and tell them. We won't be there much longer anyway. But in your case, that's not something you can do. I think your best bet is to try to find a room with some who keeps reptiles themselves already. Good luck with your search! :)

lol not all cats and dogs pee on everythng and rip stuff up :), but i see your point

I definatly agree with that! It really all depends on the owner of the dog or cat. And really, an unsupervised small child is capable of doing just as much, if not more, damage to a house than a trained indoor cat or dog. Yet I've never heard of a "No Small Children" policy.

But with the snake thing, it's the idiots who bought snakes that get big, stuck them in a home-made piece of crap enclosure, and their snake gets ends up in the neighbor's house that ruined it for everyone else who's responcible with their animals. Same goes for all the people who dump their exotics pets outside when they've gotten too big for them to deal with.

was already living there when i got mine and i just didnt tell them. i would do the same if i moved into a new place...

Ouch I had to try and find a room to rent when I had a ball python in college and it was rough. Especially because I wanted female roommates :/

I would start by not saying you have snakes in the ad, and letting them know over the phone if possible. It would be easier to assuage their fears during a conversation than it would be in an email thread. I also doubt it's the damage they are concerned with!

I got a lock for my snake's cage and let them know that there was zero possibility of the snake getting out. Would you consider that? I also let them know that the ball python is like the rabbit of snakes and she would most likely curl up in a ball and hide if approached... I don't have any corn snake experience, but I imagine they aren't too aggressive either.

Try searching through the rooms that are posted for rent and see if you can find someone that's reptile friendly too. Good luck!

We found that some landlords/ladies aren't concerned with a fear of reptiles, but the heating elements they require.

I would ask about limitations on pets. Get the prospective landlord/lady to tell you what is and is not allowed. Then go from there.

That is an excellent point! I had never considered the heating elements as being any sort of issue. Maybe reassure the landlord that your heating equipment is regulated by thermostats, other safety features.

:iagree: If you're confidant in explaining how you have complete control over your reptiles' enclosures and all the things that go with them, your landlord will (hopefully) be more open to the idea.

If you do have issues, offer to take out renter's insurance to cover any damages that could be caused by a heating element being knocked over or some such. Our landlady was leery of our collection until we offered to take out renter's insurance, then followed through and provided the paperwork. It was a nice gesture that reassured her that we are aware of the potential problems that could be caused and were willing to take responsibility of them.
