    =====================

    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
    Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

    And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

I just read a news article that said importation and trade of African rodents is being banned, as well as the sale of prarie dogs, because of that stupid Gambian rat. If it had passed the disease to a guinea pig, I'd like to see them ban those.

Anyway, is this accurate, and if so, is it permanent? Is my dream of one day running a Springhaas farm ruined forever?

I read an editorial that managed to turn this into a discussion of salmonella spread by reptiles, so at any rate we have to really watch our backs. But it doesn't sound like the government is worried about reptiles now, just mammals. What they're really worried about is the livestock industry, but that's ok.

I've just heard about rabbits.

I was just at a pet store near my work today to buy some crickets. I overheard one of the employees calling the manager about a lady who had called them from her vets office very irate claiming that the rabbit they had sold her was diagnosed with monkey pox. I wondered about the ligitimacy of the claim since the lady was calling from her vets. I figured that they must do some mighty fast lab work, or the vet made a diagnosis before the lab work was in. It made me wonder if the claim was legitimate or if the lady was trying to shake down the store.

Later I called another friend of mine who runs a pet store and she told me that she had just gotten a fax that Michigan has now banned the sale of rabbits. Both for pets and as food animals.

I wonder how long it will be before they ban the sale of all rodents. Then what happens to my snakes? What are they going to eat? Has anyone else heard about this rabbit ban?

Rabbit ban

No, there is no rabbit ban, nor is one planned. The ban is pretty cut and dry now, though I don't agree with or understand the reasoning behind it. It is now illegal to import from Africa ALL species of rodents. It is also illegal to possess for sale or public display certain rodents which include two species of African squirrells, the brush tail porcupine, zebra mice, the pouched rat, dourmice, and of course the cursed prairie dog. The CDC has made this ruling, and as far as my USDA inspector can speculate, it is a long term thing, that may never be changed. He had to come in and inventory my stock, and drop off the official paperwork. I was lucky enough to only have 3 prairie dogs left, and none of the other effected animals. I took the dogs to the vet last week to have them put down, then creamated, as the law now demands. It was very sad, but I could not afford to keep them in my store for the rest of their natural lives, taking up space needed for other purposes. Hopefully the ban will someday be lifted. I felt sorry for myself, but feel even worse for the dealers that have possibly been stuck with hundreds of prairie dogs, with choice of keeping them forever, or putting them down. Many a business might go belly up over this one

Rabbit ban

I guess I should have said there is no NATIONAL rabbit ban. I don't know about the state you live in.
