I adopted this lizard four or five years ago from a local rescue and he was already named "Cujo". He was already full grown when I got him, and they really didn't know how old he was. I guess him at 6 years or more.
He was said to be very aggressive at that time and they couldn't get anyone to take him, so I think I saved his life. I had other BDs and was breeding my own Dubia, so it was no problem setting up an extra enclosure and there was plenty to eat. I thought good care and kindness might bring him around, but not really, he still f'n hates me and everyone else. I even re-named him 'Fluffy' for awhile, in case the word 'Cujo' is what sets him off, but no joy.
Given the chance, he WILL bite. He will actively try to bite. He acts like it's a territory thing - he's not afraid and despite plenty of hides, he will advance and challenge. If I put him on the floor, he chases any movement and has tried to climb my legs after me. While holding him, he spends his entire time trying to twist around to get me. I never use gloves, but I'm tempted sometimes. He is more like a wild animal than a pet, and should be treated as such.
I don't want to discourage anyone, but I want to make sure anyone taking him isn't planning on letting him near kids or inexperienced people that might be injured.
He may make a decent breeder if one wishes to produce normals, and acts like he really wants to breed. If I give him a large leaf of collards, he will try to drag it off, but if it gets under him, he forgets about eating and starts humping it.
He is also a good looking lizard for a normal, and in good condition - all fingers and toes, full tail, fighting weight. Might be a good display animal in a secure enclosure.
So, as attractive as he seems, I have to try to adopt him out. There is no cost or adoption fee BS. Free to good home.
I'd continue to keep him, but I cannot. My issue is with allergies that are getting more severe. I turned out to be intensely allergic to the Dubia, but the lizards I have were getting to be adults and eat mostly greens anyway, so I gave the Dubia away and feed crix occasionally.
I'm better since getting the Dubia out of the house, but still have occasional, yet severe attacks. I have finally admitted that my most severe allergic reactions occur after fooling with the dragons. I put them into other enclosures to defecate and this seems to trigger them into going, as well as trigger my allergies. I keep them on clean newspaper and I guess the dust is just too much. Saturday night, I could barely breathe and coughed all night, almost couldn't go to work. During the day Saturday, I was fooling with the lizards and their enclosures. I'm still wheezing and coughing as I write this.
I'd really like to see him go to a good home, but he is not a pet, he will bite you if you let him. I don't think he really means anything by it, it's just his nature to be hateful. I wonder if the original owner had teased him.
I don't know anything about shipping and would rather just give him to someone local. I live in central Virginia and travel frequently to central Maryland. I can meet someone almost anyplace between Baltimore, MD-Richmond, VA and Rt301/I-81. If you want him shipped bad enough to pay for legit shipping, we'll figure it out.
I'm in Maryland for the week, but can take new pics when I get back to VA this weekend. IM/PM your email and I'll take fresh pictures.
Thanks, you'll love him!!
