When I post to the message boards, my photo isn't showing up (under my name.) When I check my profile, the photo is there.

That's your profile picture...whereas an Avatar is what is displayed under ones username.
Go to your User CP...under Settings & Options you'll see Edit Avatar. Upload whatever image you want, then come back to this thread and check your post
