As many of you know, I am a supervisor for Days Inn. Last night one of my desk clerks was beaten to death over a few dollars in cash. What is this world coming to? I was off last night and today, I got a call a little while ago about this. This is so sad, a friend killed over a little bit of money.

Stay tuned to wmbb.com and News 13 for updates throughout the day.

That so blows. Middle of summer here two teens went on a spree , their first victim was left dead in a parking lot over $15 while his girlfriend and her kids was in the room waiting on him. They were visiting for her son's Basic Training Graduation. A person's life is worth more than $15. Four more victims that night , 1 in the hospital in critical condition and the two teens got less than $200.

Some days its a shame almost to be a human.

I'm very sorry to hear about your friend bro.

just ridiculous over a few sad measly bucks..... how sad does this world.. no. this COUNTRY... have to become? This is America, aren't we supposed to be... some sort of STANDARD!? Bry is right... this really does have me ashamed to be related to the human race..... Granted ive felt that way for some time, but, this only reaffirms it.

Condolences to you, the friends, and the family of this person.

Thanks guys.

You know, we hear about things like this everyday, but when it hits close to home you really feel it. One day you are cracking jokes and having fun together, the next day one of you are dead. The truly sad part is his life was worth about 230.00 dollars, beaten to death for nothing. I will never understand it; I just don't understand how some people can be so cold.

The worst part is the sinking feeling that goes straight to the bottom of your stomach when you see the stretcher rolling him away. There is nothing like that, it is just so sickening. All of the memories flood you mind about all the times you seen him, but in the back of your thoughts you know you never will again.

I knew him pretty well, I know he did not try to stop anyone from taking the cash, but they just seen the need to kill him. Too cold, just way too cold to be called human.

Take care Ed, I will miss you Bro....... :(

Hey Bobby. Heartfelt condolences to his family and all those who comforted in your friend. Life is too short, and then it gets shorter. Rejoice in the good memories of him that can't be taken away. Take care.

HOUSTON

The hunt for one of Panama City's most wanted is over.

A Lynn Haven man, sought in the killing of a motel night clerk, was arrested Monday afternoon by members of the U.S. Marshals Service, according to Lt. Mark Aviles of the Panama City Police Department.

That man, David Eric Merkel, 30, is the prime suspect in the 2007 slaying of J. Edward Bennett, 58, of Panama City.

Aviles said two of his officers were en route to Houston late Monday evening to begin the extradition process.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg," Aviles said. "We've got a ton of work ahead of us."

On the morning of Oct. 22, J. Edward Bennett, a night clerk at the Days Inn Bayside in downtown Panama City, was found beaten and stabbed to death.

Police said they believe Merkel, an employee at the Beach Drive motel at the same time as Bennett, is the killer.

Merkel, according to police, has been on the run since December when he stole his mother's car and disappeared.

In April, after reportedly receiving positive results on DNA evidence, investigators issued a warrant for Merkel's arrest.

Using bank account information, police had tracked Merkel to Texas, where they began working with local media outlets in search of tips.

After the story was featured on a popular Houston television program, titled "Wheel of Justice," calls began coming in concerning Merkel's
whereabouts, Aviles said.

A suspect in a Panama City murder case is behind bars in Houston, Texas and is awaiting extradition back to Bay County.

Police say David Eric Merkel fled Florida after being questioned by police in the murder of a night clerk at the Days Inn Bayside Motel in Panama City last October. Authorities believe Merkel robbed his former employer and killed J. Edward Bennett, the night clerk at the motel.

Police say they spotted use of Merkel's ATM card in the northern Houston area in December. Panama City Police talked to a Houston area news station which aired a story about the murder.

Monday, police say a crimestoppers tip was called in and U.S. Marshalls were able to arrest Merkel. Merkel is now being held in Houston. Panama City Police detectives are in Houston working with U.S. Marshalls and other investigators to gather evidence in the case as well as interviewing Merkel.

Sergeant Jon Morris of the Panama City Police Department tells News 13 it could possible be a week before Merkel is extradited back to Bay County.

Wow, sorry to hear Bobby. The world is full of scumbags looking to prey on people. Hope he gets what he deserves!
